What is Matariki?
Different tribes celebrated Matariki at
different times. For some it was when Matariki rose in May/June. For
others it was celebrated at the first new moon, or full moon, following the
rising of Matariki. In the 21st century it is the new moon following the rising
of Matariki that signals the New Year.
In 2015, Matariki will start on the 18th
June.
See the Ministry for Culture and
Heritage’s website for Matariki information http://www.mch.govt.nz/nz-identity-heritage/matariki

Below is the 100 Word Mastery Test. Children are to attempt to learn as many of these words as possible over the next two weeks. We will also be spending time learning them in class. There will be a test on Monday and children will be retested to see their progress in two weeks time. Start by learning the words in the left hand column first, and move onto the next ones. Each column is progressively more difficult. This spelling list allows all children to extend the amount of word they can spell.

Reading
Write a review of one of the books you are reading at the moment. You may do this in your homework book or on a google doc.
Mathematics
Finding information for statistics.
Choose 5 - 10 fast food outlets like Burger King or KFC. Survey your family and friends and ask them which fast food is their favourite. Collect the information on a tally chart (tick for each vote). Make a bar graph showing the information your collected. We will be doing bar graphs in class this week so that will help you with your homework. When you have completed the graph, analyse the results; Overall, which fast food was the favourite? Did more boys/men favour one type of fast food? What was the girls/ladies favourite? You might be able to add some results yourself.

We are focusing on what 'energy' is this week and then moving onto sustainable energy. Look around your house and find out how much 'energy' is used in and around your own home. List as many sources of energy as you can. Choose two different types of energy (Eg, wood fire and lights) and make a flow diagram to show where the energy sources come from. For example, Where do the logs in your fire place come from? - What journey did the logs take to get to your fire? The electrical energy sources might be a little harder to track but with a little bit of research, you might be surprised what you find out. Choose one to display on a poster in class. You may complete the other one in your homework book or in your google doc account, in your 'Other Learning Areas' folder.
This link 'Ecokids' will help you with your research. We will also use this site in class.

Wow! We are nearly at the end of the first term! Thank you to all those who have completed their homework this term.
In the last week of school on Wednesday the 1st of April, we will be holding a Medieval Feast with Room 3 (they are also studying the same topic). We will watch a play by Room 3, watch the Medieval dances by both rooms, and then sit down to a feast. Part of the homework this week, is to find a Medieval recipe to trial at home before bring the food along to the shared feast.
- Find a Medieval recipe that is similar to what we eat today.
- Try the recipe at home.
- Ask your parents if you can make your recipe for the shared feast in week 9. Make sure that you have all the ingredients ready to make the recipe.
Here are a few websites that we have used in class.

Week 5 and 6 Homework
Topic/ Writing/Maths
Globalisation - Which cultures influence our food?
Find a favourite family recipe, write out the recipe (ingredients and method) and add a picture. Can you identify which culture/s have had an influence on this recipe? Write about all the cultural influences you know about. Can you identify where the main ingredients come from? Make connections with the countries where the products are grown or made.
Maths: Look at all the ingredients. Find out how much each one costs - use the New World, Countdown pamphlets to find prices. Sometimes you might have to divide the price. Eg, 1 Kilo of mince might be $12.00, but you might only need 500grams. List all the ingredients plus the costs and add them up. Find out the total cost if you had to buy all the ingredients.
You can present this information on an A4 piece of paper or in your homework book.
Ask you parents if you could help them to make the recipe. Take care when measuring the ingredients (This is also maths!)

We have been focusing on geometry at school and you can now able to identify a number of 2D and 3D shapes. In your home, see if you can find 2D shapes (square, triangle, rectangle, circle etc). Write down how many of each shape you can find. Now look for 3D shapes (cone, cube, cuboid, rectangular prism etc). Identify two objects that are 3D shapes as listed in brackets. Draw and label the shape of each one in your homework book. The kitchen would be a good room to find 3D shapes!
IXL will still be working for one week when you use your current username and password. The whole school will be joining IXL shortly and there is a possibility that you will get a new username and password. I will keep you up to date with any changes.
Religious Education
During Lent, we especially focus on the people of the Solomon Islands and try to understand how they live. The Solomons is made up of nearly 1,000 islands and the people depend mostly on the sea for their food.
All money donated this Lent goes to the Solomon Islands to help those who need it most. Caritas is a Catholic agency for justice, and they challenge us this Lent to spend time discovering new things, learn a new skill, or do something you have never done before. Below are a number of activities you can try for Lent. Choose at least one each week until Easter (3 weeks to go).
- Find out how to say 'good morning' in three languages. Try your new greetings at school.
- Memorise a prayer or poem and recite it to your family. This might be a new grace.
- Teach a family member or friend a new board game or outside game.
- Help a sibling or friend with their homework.
- Bake a cake or cookies and take them to someone who would appreciate it.
- Take a magnifying glass outside and look carefully at a leaf through it. Draw what you see.
- Learn four signs that are used in New Zealand sign language.
- Find out about the main foods people eat in the Pacific Islands. Try some of these foods at home.
- Help someone cook dinner. Summarise how you did it.
- Complete a household chore that you have never done before.

Mathematics
You have all been given an IXL username and password to take home. Complete the exercises in year 5 or year 6 (begin with year 5 unless Mrs Nieuwboer has told you otherwise).
IXL is a trial for the next two weeks to see if children find the site useful. Children will also be using this website in class.
Local and International News
Choose a news topic of interest to you. Find out more information about it by asking an adult, researching the topic on line or in a book. Write what you have found out about the topic and add pictures that relate to the topic. Show your information in your Homework Book.
Homework due: Friday 28 March
A wonderful range of posters have been brought to school on Friday. Well done to all those who completed their posters and handed them in on time. I know a number will come to school on Monday as well. The expectation is that everyone will complete a poster and share it with a group in class.
Religious Education
Lent is a time to reflect on how we can improve ourselves. It is also a time when we can do something extra to help others. Think about three extra tasks that you can do to help at home this week (your usual chores do not count!). List the three tasks in your homework book. When you have completed each task, write how it made you feel and how the other person reacted (Did it surprise them? Were they happy?). Complete three additional tasks in week 6.
Spelling
On Monday, you will be placed into three spelling groups. Learn the words in your group list. Write each one into a sentence. If you wish to extend your spelling word range, learn all the words on all the group lists. Spelling test will be on Friday.

Reading
Read every night for 20 - 30 minutes minimum (That means you can read for longer if you wish). Choose two different books, or, two chapters of one book, and write a book / chapter review each week. Mrs Nieuwboer will give you a book review outline on Monday.
Mathematics
New tasks have been set on Studyladder. There are tasks to help you with your times tables as well. Please complete the set tasks as these relate to what we are learning in class. When you have completed your homework, then you can play the games!
English / Vocabulary
It is important to always be trying to increase the number of words you know, and what they mean. www.freerice.com is a free and safe website that has a 'Vocabulary' section that helps you improve your vocabulary. It shows you a word and gives you four possible meanings to choose from. Give it a go and see how many new words you know by the end of two weeks. This website also has a mathematics section that might be helpful.
Homework due: 14 March
Homework will be added to this blog site every two weeks. You are expected to manage your time over the two weeks to complete your homework when it is due. It is best to work on every subject regularly rather than try to complete everything at once. Reading and mathematics should be completed daily.
Weeks 3 and 4
Topic: We are studying ancient roman times. Research one of the following areas and make a poster showing your learning. Some questions have been added to help you with your research.
- How Romans lived - What type of housing was there? Don't forget the kings!
- Roman clothing - What did they wear and what was the difference in clothing between rich and poor people?
- Education in roman times - Who went to school? What were the classrooms like?
- Work in roman times - What type of work was there? What tools did they use?
- Hierarchy - What was the difference between kings, villagers, peasants, slaves?
Your poster must include an equal amount of writing and pictures, a map and references (a list of books, internet sites, etc where you found your information). You will be sharing the information on your poster with a group of children in class. Posters will be displayed in class and are expected to be of a high standard of work. You may neatly hand write or print out the writing for you poster. However, you must NOT copy and paste pieces of information straight off the internet. All writing must be in your own words. Posters are due on the 28th of February.
Reading: Read for 20 - 30 minutes every night. Record which book/s, chapters you have read.
Religious Education: You will be taking your RE learning journal home this week to show your parents. There is a page at the beginning that explains the RE programme. It is a Year 6 programme - this is not a mistake. Bring your learning journals back to school by Wednesday 19 February as we will need to use them in class.
Mathematics: We are using measurement in class. Complete the tasks on 'Studyladder'. You will be given your own username and password on Monday.
Spelling: Please learn this list of words over the next two weeks. List 1 is related to our roman studies, and will be used a lot in our writing. List 2 is made up of homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings.
List 1:citizen, roman, ancient, slave, city, sacred, soldier, Rome, Italy, legion, sword, shield
List 2: aloud, allowed, knew, new, made, maid, night, knight, cent, sent, scent, flu, flew
Homework due Friday 28 February
Make a two week timetable and add in your sports and other activities. Add your homework and spread it over the two weeks so that you can manage what you have to complete, as well as have time to play! Show your parents what you have done and ask for their input. Hang your timetable in a place where you can view it daily.
Reading: Read for 20 - 30 minutes every night. Mrs Nieuwboer will have books that you can choose from, or, you can select your own books. Record which book/s, chapters you have read. At the end of each week, write a paragraph describing what the book/chapter is about.
Waitangi Day: On the 6th of February it is Waitangi Day. This is a public holiday in New Zealand. Find out why we celebrate Waitangi Day. Include 3 facts about Waitangi Day that you did not already know about. Create a page in your homework book that shows your understanding of Waitangi Day. You may use pictures as well as words, but I expect to see more words than pictures!
Mathematics: Learn your times tables up to 12x12. Begin with learning 2, 5 and 10 timetables before moving onto the other ones. For those who know their times tables, get someone to test you within a 3 minute time frame. Record how many times tables you got correct in your homework book. Repeat this daily to see if you can better your score. Remember, get the person to call out random times tables. Eg, 3x4, 8x9, 6x5 etc. (Not the 3 times tables in order as this is too easy).
