Homework Weeks 9 and 10

What is Matariki?
Different tribes celebrated Matariki at different times.  For some it was when Matariki rose in May/June. For others it was celebrated at the first new moon, or full moon, following the rising of Matariki. In the 21st century it is the new moon following the rising of Matariki that signals the New Year.
In 2015, Matariki will start on the 18th June.
See the Ministry for Culture and Heritage’s website for Matariki information http://www.mch.govt.nz/nz-identity-heritage/matariki

Choose two (or more) activities over the next two weeks.

Make flax fish
(see tutorial)

Star weaving
 (see youtube tutorial)

Make kite
(see tutorial)

There is a free kite-making workshop at the Rotorua Public Library on Thursday the 9th of July at 1.30pm.

Design a Matariki poster and enter the competition run by the Rotorua Public Library.

Entries close Friday 3rd of July. Entry forms can be picked up at the Public Library, Aquatic Centre and the Museum.

Mathematics
Complete tasks on IXL. Focus more on division as this is an area that I can see many children have not attempted or completed as well as multiplication.
This week we are focusing in statistics, so also spend time on statistics on IXL. Begin at the Year 5 level and move onto Year 6 when you are able to successfully complete all the tasks at Year 5.

Homework Due: 12th of June

Children have a number of entries on their google docs and many are not quite finished. As part of homework this week, all children are to go through their work on google docs and complete or improve their work.

Google Docs

Topic
Click on this link Ecokids and it will take you to a safe site for children to research ideas on energy. We have tried this in class so children are familiar with the site. Spend time reading through all parts of the 'Renewable Energy' and the 'Energy' tabs. Take the quiz, do the word scramble, or find out all about fossil fuels.
Write down 10 interesting facts that you learned from this site.

Spelling
Below is the 100 Word Mastery Test. Children are to attempt to learn as many of these words as possible over the next two weeks. We will also be spending time learning them in class. There will be a test on Monday and children will be retested to see their progress in two weeks time. Start by learning the words in the left hand column first, and move onto the next ones. Each column is progressively more difficult. This spelling list allows all children to extend the amount of word they can spell.

Mathematics
Finding information for statistics.
Choose 5 - 10 fast food outlets like Burger King or KFC. Survey your family and friends and ask them which fast food is their favourite.  Collect the information on a tally chart (tick for each vote). Make a bar graph showing the information your collected. We will be doing bar graphs in class this week so that will help you with your homework. When you have completed the graph, analyse the results; Overall, which fast food was the favourite? Did more boys/men favour one type of fast food? What was the girls/ladies favourite? You might be able to add some results yourself.

Topic
We are focusing on what 'energy' is this week and then moving onto sustainable energy. Look around your house and find out how much 'energy' is used in and around your own home. List as many sources of energy as you can. Choose two different types of energy (Eg, wood fire and lights) and make a flow diagram to show where the energy sources come from. For example, Where do the logs in your fire place come from? - What journey did the logs take to get to your fire? The electrical energy sources might be a little harder to track but with a little bit of research, you might be surprised what you find out. Choose one to display on a poster in class. You may complete the other one in your homework book or in your google doc account, in your 'Other Learning Areas' folder.

This link 'Ecokids' will help you with your research. We will also use this site in class.
/pub/eco_info/topics/energy/intro/index.cfm

Mathematics
We are focusing on multiplication and division at the moment. Tasks relating to these topics have been set on Studyladder. Pick and choose the times tables that you need to learn first. Another good website is 'freerice.com'. Go to the maths section and there are multiple choice problems for multiplication and division.

Reading
Keep up your reading every evening. Make a list of books or chapters you are reading.

Homework is due on the 15th of May

Weeks 1 and 2 Homework Term 2

Weeks 8 and 9 Homework

Wow! We are nearly at the end of the first term! Thank you to all those who have completed their homework this term.

In the last week of school on Wednesday the 1st of April, we will be holding a Medieval Feast with Room 3 (they are also studying the same topic). We will watch a play by Room 3, watch the Medieval dances by both rooms, and then sit down to a feast. Part of the homework this week, is to find a Medieval recipe to trial at home before bring the food along to the shared feast.

  1. Find a Medieval recipe that is similar to what we eat today.
  2. Try the recipe at home.
  3. Ask your parents if you can make your recipe for the shared feast in week 9. Make sure that you have all the ingredients ready to make the recipe.
Here are a few websites that we have used in class.

Many children have not completed all their work on their Google Apps account. Over the next two weeks, you are to go through all your work and complete any work that still needs to be done.

Homework to be completed by Thursday the 2nd of April.

Weeks 6 and 7 Homework

Topic
We will be focusing on food eaten in the Middle Ages over the next two weeks. Your hand-made paper will be turned into a recipe booklet and you will be making illustrations around the edge. Additional to the Middle Ages recipes, you will be able to include several of your own favourite recipes. Find two favourite recipes and bring them along to school. First try to make the recipes at home. This will help you with your maths (measurement). Ask an adult to help you. Write a brief description of the recipe and what it tasted like. You might also be able to recommend other ingredients that can be added to the recipe.  This can be added to your recipe booklet as your own reflections about the recipes.
Reading
Read every night for at least 20 minutes.

Mathematics
Your challenge is to organise a Medieval Feast for ten people (only pretend). Use the pamphlets from New World, Countdown etc, and choose ingredients that you will use for your feast. You might like to cut out the pictures and stick them in your Homework book. Create a menu and write it in your Homework book. List all the ingredients and add up all the prices. You might have to double or triple some prices - show your working out. What does the whole feast cost?

There are additional tasks set on Studyladder.

Homework Weeks 7 and 8 (Due on 12.9.14)

Mathematics
Study Ladder has a number of new tasks relating to fractions and decimals. The tasks start off easy and gradually get harder. Work through the tasks at your own pace. Tasks on IXL can also be completed.

Study Ladder/Topic
There are two maps set as tasks for those who wish to find out more about countries.

Reading
Read every night. Read the information on food products and explain to your family what to look for when buying products.
Those on Home Reading, remember to fill in your notebook every night and put your books in your bag on Thursday night. They need to be returned to school on Fridays.

Topic/ Writing
For this activity you will need a piece of paper (A4 will do), a felt pen, glue, scissors and some pamphlets form New World, Countdown etc with the weekly food specials. Draw a food pyramid (a triangle divided into 3 parts). Cut out food items that will fit into each part. Remember, the top layer is food you only eat sometimes, while the bottom is food you can eat lots of. To the side of pyramid, or underneath, write what each layer means. See if you can remember all the interesting bits of information Andy told us about when she spoke about each food group. Show an adult your completed food pyramid and explain what it means.

Week 5 and 6 Homework

Topic/ Writing/Maths
Globalisation - Which cultures influence our food?
Find a favourite family recipe, write out the recipe (ingredients and method) and add a picture. Can you identify which culture/s have had an influence on this recipe? Write about all the cultural influences you know about. Can you identify where the main ingredients come from? Make connections with the countries where the products are grown or made.
Maths: Look at all the ingredients. Find out how much each one costs - use the New World, Countdown pamphlets to find prices. Sometimes you might have to divide the price. Eg, 1 Kilo of mince might be $12.00, but you might only need 500grams. List all the ingredients plus the costs and add them up. Find out the total cost if you had to buy all the ingredients.
You can present this information on an A4 piece of paper or in your homework book.

Ask you parents if you could help them to make the recipe. Take care when measuring the ingredients (This is also maths!)
Spelling
Learn to spell all the words in your group. Remember to learn the words in the new group if you changed groups since the last spelling test.

Topic/Maths - Can you add food miles to your topic poster? How far has your product travelled to get to New Zealand? There are several 'Food Miles' websites that will give you the answers.

Reading
Read every night. List the books or chapters of books that you are reading. Choose one book or chapter and write a review. Add the title, author, illustrator (if there is one), brief outline of the story, your opinion of the story, rate the story out of 10, who do you recommend should read the story.

Globalisation - Where in the world does our food come from? Choose five products from the pantry, fridge or freezer, and find out where the ingredients come from. Some products might have a lot of different ingredients so just list the main ones. Take a photos of the product, peel off the label or sketch the product and make a poster showing the five products, a world map, and a link to where the main ingredients come from in the world. Add any information that you think is relevant to the products such as what culture influenced this product. For example, pasta has been influenced by the Italian culture/immigrants. Your poster will be displayed in class.

Homework due: 15 August

There have been some major developments in the world over the last few days including conflicts between Israel and Palestine (Gaza Strip), and between Russia and the Ukraine. Research one conflict and find out the history behind why they are fighting, what does each country want, and who is trying to resolve the conflicts? You will need adult help with this homework. Think about what you already know, research some facts, and discuss what is happening with an adult.
Mathematics
IXL tasks can be completed. Choose subtraction problems over the next two weeks as this is an area we will be focusing on in class.

Spelling
Learn to spell all the words in your group. If you don't know the meaning of a word, look up the meaning.

Week 9 Homework

Topic
Next term, we will be studying globalisation in relation to food; the world-wide distribution of some food items, and where our food comes from.

Think about a white loaf of bread. List all the ingredients. Find out where each ingredient comes from.

Now think of a loaf of bread with seeds; sunflower seeds, poppy seeds and sesame seeds. Where in the world do all these seeds come from? Do they come from lots of different countries? Is there one country that produces more than others?

Can you track where the seeds might have been grown? What journey might each type of seed have to take to make it to our supermarkets in Rotorua, New Zealand?

Give it a go and see how much information you can find.

Mathematics
IXL tasks can be completed this week and during the holidays.

Reading
Choose two books from the library to read during the holidays. Complete the Holiday Reading Programme and fill in the form. Great prizes to be won for those who participate.

Week 3 and 4 Homework
Mathematics
New tasks have been set on Study Ladder. We are focusing on multiplication and division at the moment.
Mawhero maths group - learn your doubles up to 20 and 2 times tables.
Karaka, Kakariki, Kowhai maths groups - spend time learning your times tables up to 12x12.
Science
Over the next two weeks, we are studying the respiratory and muscular systems of the human body. Research facts about both of these systems. Try to find at least 10 facts about each. This information will be used when we discuss and write about both these body systems.

Religious Education
We are focusing on the Holy Spirit strand over the coming weeks. Try to find out all the 'Fruits of the Holy Spirit' and list them in your homework book. Choose one and write how you use this gift to help others. For example, if you choose 'love', you might explain how you show love for your parents. Illustrate (draw) a picture of you using the gift. Use an A4 piece of paper (you may take paper from school) to complete your work. All work will be displayed around the alter.
Reading
Read at least 30 minutes every night. Write a book review of a story or article you have read.
Spelling
Learn to spell all the words for your group.

These lists contain most words, plus a small number of extra words, that were in the test you did at the beginning of this term. You will be given the same test at the end of the term. If you wish to do some extra spelling work, slowly learn all the words in all of these lists over the next six weeks.

All homework is due on Friday the 30th of May.

Term 2, 2014
Your homework has been set for two weeks. Try to do reading and mathematics regularly throughout the two weeks. All key information has been highlighted to make it easier for you to check that all homework has been completed.
Week 1 Homework
Mathematics
New tasks have been set on Study ladder. There are activities for times tables and these can be completed over and over until you get the answers all correct. There are also tasks set for 'area' as this one focus this term. We did complete some work on area last term so you should remember how to do most activities. Videos are included to remind you.
Science
We are studying the skeleton of the human body throughout the next two weeks. Research information on the human skeletal system and find 10 interesting facts to share in class. Write what you have learnt in your homework book. There are some tasks set on 'Study Ladder' about skeletons. You can find them in the science tasks.

Research a few other skeletons of different animals. Are skeletons always on the inside of bodies? Are the number of bones the same in all skeletons? Choose one skeletal system other than from a human (like a horse, cat, dog, fish, cockroach etc), and create a poster showing all the details, drawings, pictures, and written information about the animal's skeletal system. Posters are due at school on Friday May 16th.
Reading
Bring your holiday reading logs back to school this week. Read every night. Try reading something different like the newspaper, instructions of a game, a recipe, magazine, or information on the side of a cereal box. In June, you will be completing a reading assessment which will include a number of different types of texts including instructions, poems, and articles.
Spelling
In the last week of Term 1, you all completed a spelling placement test. You have been placed in groups A to E and you will be told which group you are in on Monday. Each group will have a new list of words to learn, and you will be tested regularly throughout the next two weeks, with a final test held at the end of the two week period.
Learn to spell each word in your group and write each one into a sentence. Remember to include all the correct punctuation like capital letters and full stops.

Reading
Read every night for 20 - 30 minutes minimum. Write a book review of one interesting story or chapter that you have read.
Mathematics
We have been focusing on geometry at school and you can now able to identify a number of 2D and 3D shapes. In your home, see if you can find 2D shapes (square, triangle, rectangle, circle etc). Write down how many of each shape you can find. Now look for 3D shapes (cone, cube, cuboid, rectangular prism etc). Identify two objects that are 3D shapes as listed in brackets. Draw and label the shape of each one in your homework book. The kitchen would be a good room to find 3D shapes!
IXL will still be working for one week when you use your current username and password. The whole school will be joining IXL shortly and there is a possibility that you will get a new username and password. I will keep you up to date with any changes.
Religious Education
During Lent, we especially focus on the people of the Solomon Islands and try to understand how they live. The Solomons is made up of nearly 1,000 islands and the people depend mostly on the sea for their food.
All money donated this Lent goes to the Solomon Islands to help those who need it most. Caritas is a Catholic agency for justice, and they challenge us this Lent to spend time discovering new things, learn a new skill, or do something you have never done before. Below are a number of activities you can try for Lent. Choose at least one each week until Easter (3 weeks to go).
  •  Find out how to say 'good morning' in three languages. Try your new greetings at school.
  • Memorise a prayer or poem and recite it to your family. This might be a new grace.
  • Teach a family member or friend a new board game or outside game.
  • Help a sibling or friend with their homework.
  • Bake a cake or cookies and take them to someone who would appreciate it.
  • Take a magnifying glass outside and look carefully at a leaf through it. Draw what you see.
  • Learn four signs that are used in New Zealand sign language.
  • Find out about the main foods people eat in the Pacific Islands. Try some of these foods at home.
  • Help someone cook dinner. Summarise how you did it.
  • Complete a household chore that you have never done before.
Homework is due: 11 April (Although the Caritas challenge will continue until Easter)

Mathematics
You have all been given an IXL username and password to take home. Complete the exercises in year 5 or year 6 (begin with year 5 unless Mrs Nieuwboer has told you otherwise).
IXL is a trial for the next two weeks to see if children find the site useful. Children will also be using this website in class.
Local and International News
Choose a news topic of interest to you. Find out more information about it by asking an adult, researching the topic on line or in a book. Write what you have found out about the topic and add pictures that relate to the topic. Show your information in your Homework Book.
Homework due: Friday 28 March
Week 5 and 6 Homework
A wonderful range of posters have been brought to school on Friday. Well done to all those who completed their posters and handed them in on time. I know a number will come to school on Monday as well. The expectation is that everyone will complete a poster and share it with a group in class.
Religious Education
Lent is a time to reflect on how we can improve ourselves. It is also a time when we can do something extra to help others. Think about three extra tasks that you can do to help at home this week (your usual chores do not count!). List the three tasks in your homework book. When you have completed each task, write how it made you feel and how the other person reacted (Did it surprise them? Were they happy?). Complete three additional tasks in week 6.
Spelling
On Monday, you will be placed into three spelling groups. Learn the words in your group list. Write each one into a sentence. If you wish to extend your spelling word range, learn all the words on all the group lists. Spelling test will be on Friday.

Reading
Read every night for 20 - 30 minutes minimum (That means you can read for longer if you wish). Choose two different books, or, two chapters of one book, and write a book / chapter review each week. Mrs Nieuwboer will give you a book review outline on Monday.
Mathematics
New tasks have been set on Studyladder. There are tasks to help you with your times tables as well. Please complete the set tasks as these relate to what we are learning in class. When you have completed your homework, then you can play the games!
English / Vocabulary
It is important to always be trying to increase the number of words you know, and what they mean. www.freerice.com is a free and safe website that has a 'Vocabulary' section that helps you improve your vocabulary. It shows you a word and gives you four possible meanings to choose from. Give it a go and see how many new words you know by the end of two weeks. This website also has a mathematics section that might be helpful.
Homework due: 14 March
Homework will be added to this blog site every two weeks. You are expected to manage your time over the two weeks to complete your homework when it is due. It is best to work on every subject regularly rather than try to complete everything at once. Reading and mathematics should be completed daily.

Weeks 3 and 4

Topic: We are studying ancient roman times. Research one of the following areas and make a poster showing your learning. Some questions have been added to help you with your research.
  • How Romans lived - What type of housing was there? Don't forget the kings!
  • Roman clothing - What did they wear and what was the difference in clothing between rich and poor people?
  • Education in roman times - Who went to school? What were the classrooms like?
  • Work in roman times - What type of work was there? What tools did they use?
  • Hierarchy - What was the difference between kings, villagers, peasants, slaves?
Your poster must include an equal amount of writing and pictures, a map and references (a list of books, internet sites, etc where you found your information). You will be sharing the information on your poster with a group of children in class. Posters will be displayed in class and are expected to be of a high standard of work. You may neatly hand write or print out the writing for you poster. However, you must NOT copy and paste pieces of information straight off the internet. All writing must be in your own words. Posters are due on the 28th of February.

Reading: Read for 20 - 30 minutes every night. Record which book/s, chapters you have read.

Religious Education: You will be taking your RE learning journal home this week to show your parents. There is a page at the beginning that explains the RE programme. It is a Year 6 programme - this is not a mistake. Bring your learning journals back to school by Wednesday 19 February as we will need to use them in class.

Mathematics: We are using measurement in class. Complete the tasks on 'Studyladder'. You will be given your own username and password on Monday.

Spelling: Please learn this list of words over the next two weeks. List 1 is related to our roman studies, and will be used a lot in our writing. List 2 is made up of homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings.

List 1:citizen, roman, ancient, slave, city, sacred, soldier, Rome, Italy, legion, sword, shield

List 2: aloud, allowed, knew, new, made, maid, night, knight, cent, sent, scent, flu, flew

Homework due Friday 28 February

Weeks 1 and 2

Make a two week timetable and add in your sports and other activities. Add your homework and spread it over the two weeks so that you can manage what you have to complete, as well as have time to play! Show your parents what you have done and ask for their input. Hang your timetable in a place where you can view it daily.

Reading: Read for 20 - 30 minutes every night. Mrs Nieuwboer will have books that you can choose from, or, you can select your own books. Record which book/s, chapters you have read. At the end of each week, write a paragraph describing what the book/chapter is about.

Waitangi Day: On the 6th of February it is Waitangi Day. This is a public holiday in New Zealand. Find out why we celebrate Waitangi Day. Include 3 facts about Waitangi Day that you did not already know about. Create a page in your homework book that shows your understanding of Waitangi Day. You may use pictures as well as words, but I expect to see more words than pictures!

Mathematics: Learn your times tables up to 12x12. Begin with learning 2, 5 and 10 timetables before moving onto the other ones. For those who know their times tables, get someone to test you within a 3 minute time frame. Record how many times tables you got correct in your homework book. Repeat this daily to see if you can better your score. Remember, get the person to call out random times tables. Eg, 3x4, 8x9, 6x5  etc. (Not the 3 times tables in order as this is too easy).

Homework due: Friday 14 February
